Toyota concept cars

The FT-CH (Future Toyota-Compact Hybrid)

The FT-CH (Future Toyota-Compact Hybrid), with a gasoline-electric hybrid system, pursues outstanding environmental performance while remaining fun to drive. On the outside, its triangular silhouette represents the latest in aerodynamics theory-based airflow management, and, on the inside, refinement testifies to the importance placed on personal space.Compared to the Toyota Prius, the FT-CH is 22 inches shorter in overall length and less than an inch narrower in overall width. It is lighter in weight and more fuel efficient than the Prius. This concept is targeting a lower price range than the Prius line-up, thus "appealing to a younger, less-affluent buyer demographic."
FT-86 G Sports Concept

The Toyota FT-86 G Sports Concept is a modification of the Toyota FT-86 Concept manufactured jointly by Toyota and Subaru and shown at the 2010 Tokyo Auto Salon as part of the Toyota G Sports range. The FT-86 G Sports Concept differs from the original FT-86 in the use of carbon fibre panels, a vented bonnet, a large rear spoiler, new 19 inch wheels and a custom exhaust. The interior features Recaro bucket seats and a rollcage. The horizontally opposed engine is upgraded with a turbocharger. Tyres are Potenza RE050 245/40R19 at the front and 275/35R19 at the rear. The FT-86 G Sports concept has reappeared at Toyota's showroom in Amlux, Ikebukuro and Osaka Auto Messe 2010 car tuning exhibition.
FT-86 Coupé Concept

The Toyota FT-86 Concept is a concept car manufactured jointly by Toyota and Subaru. The vehicle consists of many design cues from the earlier FT-HS concept. All that is known about the car so far is that it will be a light front engine, rear drive, 4 or 5 seat coupé, with a new 2 litre Toyota-Subaru "D-4S" Boxer engine. The FT-86 rides on a modified Subaru Impreza platform with 101.2-inch wheelbase, with length, width, and height measuring 163.8, 69.3, and 49.6 inches, respectively. A base price in the USD $20,000 range is expected when the car hits the market with the Subaru version following shortly afterwards.

It is expected that the Toyota and Subaru versions will be styled similarly on the outside, with the Subaru version getting different head and tail lights and a different hood. It has a 2.0 litre naturally aspirated boxer engine mated to a Subaru 6-speed manual transmission. The concept is fitted with brakes from Advics, a joint venture company formed between Aisin Seiki, Denso, Sumitomo Electric and Toyota.

According to chief engineer Tetsuya Tada, the unique shoujyouhi red colour was based on the colour of a Japanese monkey's backside.
Prius Custom Plus Concept

The Prius Custom Plus Concept is a modification of the Toyota Prius and shown at the 2010 Tokyo Auto Salon. The Custom Plus differs from the Prius by its aggressive body kit and new wheels.
Toyota PM

The PM is a personal mobility vehicle that "fits like a glove" to create a feeling of unity between the driver and the vehicle. Cutting-edge vehicle-to-vehicle communications technologies are employed under the concept of "meeting, linking and hanging out together".
Toyota GRMN iQ concept

Toyota NLSV

The NLSV features a large, wireless electric sliding door on the passenger side and a flatter and wider floor, proposing a new concept in simple but functional vehicle utility.
The Toyota NLSV is a minivan that features a large electric sliding door, low floor and a high ceiling. Its universal design is intended to make it easier for everyone to enter and exit, even the physically handicapped. The floor is flat and the seat can be rearranged to carry large items, like the kayak loaded into the vehicle at the show. The NLSV was introduced at the 2003 Tokyo Motor Show.
Lexus IS F Circuit Club concept

The Lexus IS F is a curious car. 416 bristling horsepower, one of the world's sweetest-sounding engines and an 8-speed flappy-paddle 'box that shifts faster than you blink are all excellent. However, it looks a little odd, has funny tailpipes and weighs too much. That last little bit - the IS F's big bones - turn a really great road car into something of a pig on the track. We know this because we drove an IS F at Laguna Seca.
Toyota GRMN FR concept

The new car would also be a front-engine, rear drive model and will be based on the GRMN Hot Hatch Concept that was first shown at the Tokyo Auto Salon earlier this year. Based on the Toyota Aygo this concept features a Daihatsu rear-drive setup and a 1.5-liter engine making around 100-hp. That’s not much, but the car is expected to weight right around the 2,000 lb mark. The hatch body will be tossed in favor or a coupe profile and to add to the package, Toyota will also maintain the concept’s race-ready double wishbone rear suspension. Toyota is said to be targeting a 1.4 million yen price point
Toyota SU-HV1

The Toyota SU-HV1 is another iteration of the Lexus RX hybrid, exclusively for the Japanese market. The hybrid engine, promised to be available in the next two years on the RX 330 sport utility, provides V-8 performance but with far better fuel economy. The Toyota SU-HV1 was introduced at the 2003 Tokyo International Motor Show.

Toyota FJ Cruiser

Toyota tipped its cap to the past when it introduced the FJ Cruiser concept at the 2003 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Jim Press, executive vice president and COO for Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A Inc., introduced the industrial-strength concept vehicle that resembles a smaller and slightly less angular Hummer H2. Painted in the same dim-blue shade that once was common on many of the old FJ-series Land Cruisers launched in the United States in 1958, this FJ Cruiser is beyond contemporary.

Its interior is ahead of its time, featuring funky minimalistic seats with exposed hardware. All four seats have a flat-panel back, and when folded down create a flat surface the size of the entire cabin that's suitable for sleeping on. According to Press, the truck is aimed at young drivers with active outdoor lifestyles. The concept comes with a portable remote Global Positioning System hand unit. The dashboard is dominated by a metal grab bar that's as wide as the dashboard. All the instruments are ultramodern.

The FJ Cruiser has an upright windshield, a two-tone cap roof and additional headlamps integrated into the rearview mirrors. It has a wide track and a reasonably long wheelbase (106.3-inch wheelbase vs. a 170.9-inch overall length) and rides on 20-inch wheels. It is powered by a supercharged 3.4-liter V-6 engine that generates 250 horsepower.

Press said Toyota would gauge press and consumer reaction to the concept before deciding whether to produce it.
Toyota FINE-S

The FINE-S was introduced at the 2003 North American International Auto Show in Detroit as part of a Toyota press conference that outlined the company's plans for producing hybrid and other environmentally friendly technology.

The FINE-S stands for Fuel Cell Innovative Emotion Sport. It looks like a spaceship wearing shades and uses electric motors at each wheel. The FINE-S features a long wheelbase with very short front- and rear overhangs and a sleek low-to-the-ground aerodynamic design. Inside, the FINE-S features a creative four-seat design.
Toyota Crown

The Crown concept is a contemporary interpretation of Toyota's most conservative sedan. It sits low to the ground to create an elegant exterior. Its interior is roomy and features welcoming luxury amenities. It is powered by a 3.0-liter V-6 with a six-speed-automatic transmission. The newly developed powertrain is intended to deliver plenty of power over the full range of speeds as well as outstanding fuel economy. Safety features include a pre-crash safety system, a lane-keeping function, radar cruise control, adaptive front lights and a structural design intended to provide excellent collision safety and minimize pedestrian injuries.

The Toyota Crown was introduced at the 2003 Tokyo Motor Show.
Toyota FT-HS

The Toyota FT-HS is a hybrid sports car concept introduced at the 2007 North American International Auto Show. Calty Design Research designed the concept and suggests that it could fill the place of the Toyota Supra. FT-HS stands for Future Toyota Hybrid Sport.

Boasting a powerful V6 3.5L engine, the FT-HS is coupled with Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive® to produce a target power output of approximately 400 horsepower and a projected zero-to-60 acceleration in the four-second range. At a mid-priced market position, the FT-HS would be a true "attainable exotic" with 21st-century performance.

A sculpted front and rear remove mass around key functional components, while the roof has a distinctive scooped-out section designed to reduce aerodynamic drag and provide head room at the key areas.

The FT-HS's interior features create a dedicated driver's cockpit that includes a cross-car instrument panel structure and delta-wing driver pod. An integrated instrument panel surrounds the driver, creating an enclosed pod effect. Armrests flow seamlessly into the door and surrounding interior. Seating is optimized for a lightweight appearance and function: The seating accommodates four and then converts to a two-seater when the roof retracts.
Toyota CS&S

Toyota introduced its CS&S (short for Compact Sports and Specialty) concept car at the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show. The small but spacious 2+2 features a multimedia system, four-wheel drive and a 1.5-liter hybrid powertrain located midship.
Toyota FT-EV

At the 2009 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, the world got its first look at Toyota’s FT-EV, a battery electric vehicle (BEV) concept. You may be asking, why are we showing this advanced-technology vehicle now, just as we are debuting the all-new Prius? Well, the answer at Toyota is simple: right place, right time, right vehicle.

We believe there is no single solution to our future mobility challenges. What is the right vehicle for Tokyo right now might not be the best product for Kansas City today or Madrid next year. One thing is certain: Even in this difficult time for our industry, we must continue to look to the future. We are maintaining our pace for developing advanced technologies and exploring many technology options for future mobility.

We see the FT-EV concept as a great vehicle for the urban commuter. It is ideal for someone who drives fewer than 50 miles a day, mostly on flat surface streets, and has easy access to recharging options, such as a personal garage or a recharging station on a city street. While this vehicle will be perfect for the urban setting, it might not be the best solution for the rural dweller. This is why we continue to look at various technologies, such as the compressed natural gas Camry Hybrid concept that was shown at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show.

The FT-EV shares the platform of the Toyota iQ, a lightweight, 4-passenger micro-car that is on sale in Japan and Europe. This version is white with gold and silver design accents and a flared front and rear. With its lithium-ion battery, it will reach a top speed of 70 mph.
Toyota FT-EV II

The Toyota FT-EV II is a small, battery electric, concept vehicle built by Toyota as a modified Toyota iQ and first shown at the October 2009 Tokyo Motor Show. It differs from the FT-EV by seating four people, by having more parts of the body transparent and electrically operated sliding doors. A pair of linked joysticks (each joystick duplicating the other) control acceleration, braking and steering using drive-by-wire. The top speed is over 100 km/h (62 mph) and the range is 90 km (56 mi).
Toyota FINE-N

The Fine-N hints at the coming revolution in automotive design by employing an advanced fuel-cell system. It touts an innovative package and fresh styling made possible by its fuel cell layout and four in-wheel motors.
Toyota F3R

The Toyota F3R was a concept car by Toyota's Calty design facility that was introduced at the 2006 North American International Auto Show. It is a hybrid powered minivan designed to have youthful appeal and escape the "soccer mom" stigma commonly associated with minivans.

The F3R has three rows of seats with three doors on either side. The front and middle doors open normally but the rear door opens in the opposite direction. There is no pillar between the middle and rear doors, so the openings are very large. The right and centre seats in middle row fold flat into the floor and the remaining left hand seat can be fully reclined to make a sideways facing bench seat.

Exterior styling is similar to the Scion xB with 22 inch wheels.
Toyota A-BAT

The A-BAT is a concept truck revealed on 27 December 2007 and manufactured by Toyota. The A-BAT is the first Toyota to have a mid-gate allowing cargo longer than the standard four-foot bed to extend into the cab (like a Chevrolet Avalanche or Honda Ridgeline). Power for the A-BAT comes from Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive mated to a four-cylinder engine. The A-BAT officially debuted at the 2008 North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

The concept truck is similar in size to Toyota's compact SUV, the RAV4. The A-BAT measures 181.3 inches in length, while the RAV4 measures 181.1 inches. It can also seat up to four people.

On 22 September 2008, the website indicated that Toyota had confirmed that some form of the Toyota A-BAT would see production, barring unforeseen production costs. The article also stated that Toyota had cancelled production of a Tundra diesel truck. Although Toyota later denied official confirmation of the Tundra's cancellation, no mention was made denying the statement regarding the A-BAT. Sources say that a production version of the concept will likely have a four-cylinder engine as an option, as well as a four-cylinder hybrid engine.
Toyota ES3

The Toyota ES3 (Eco Spirit cubed) was a concept car made by Toyota in 2001. It was designed to use parts made from bioplastics. The ES3 was not made into a production vehicle but the technology was used in the Raum in 2003 under the name of Toyota Eco-Plastic.
Toyota Pod

The Toyota Pod was a concept car created by Toyota in collaboration with Sony. The Pod was first shown at the 2001 Tokyo Motor Show. The Pod was unique as it was designed with artificial intelligence systems built in to make the car appear more personal.

The Pod was much like a living being due to the artificial intelligence programmed into it. The featured a screen inside with Sony-created software running on it, capable of creating shopping lists and running music and radio. The car could also judge the attitude and mood of the driver based on their reactions and how they are driving, and could offer advice on how to improve their current mood. The seats inside are like stools which could freely spin and rotate. On the exterior, the Pod could express its own feelings with coloured LEDs - red for anger, yellow for happy, blue for sad - and an antenna that wags, much like a dog's tail. The Pod was designed as a "car of the future" and hence was never put into production.

The Pod was featured in the game Gran Turismo Concept and had an exclusive race to itself. A new track - using segments from the Clubman Stage Route 5 course - was created which involved 6 Pods driving through the pitlane backwards before stopping in a special area for several seconds before being allowed to resume racing.
Toyota DMT

The Toyota DMT (Dual Mode Traveller) was a concept van made by Toyota and first shown at the 2001 Tokyo Motor Show. The van had a high mounted driving position and a rear cabin designed to be useful as an office or studio.
Toyota FSX

The Toyota FXS (Future eXperimental Sports) was a concept car made by Toyota and first shown at the 2001 Tokyo Motor Show. The coupe was powered by a 4.3 L 3UZ-FE V8 engine using a 6 speed sequential manual gearbox.
Toyota Voltz

he Voltz concept car is the Japanese version of the Matrix concept shown at Detroit. The production version goes on sale early next year as a production SUV/station wagon. A smaller variation on the same theme made its debut at Tokyo, called the Toyota ist. It’s powered by a 1.3-liter engine compared to a 1.8-liter engine in the Voltz/Matrix.
Toyota RSC

The Toyota RSC ("Rugged Sport Coupe") was a Toyota 2-door SUV concept car that was first shown at the 2001 Chicago Auto Show.

The RSC was designed by Calty as a 'pure concept vehicle', with no intention to go into production but to 'connect emotionally with young buyers'.Design cues came from rally cars used in the World Rally Championships,with functional lines, a lack of luxury features and 'designed to convey the sparse, functional simplicity of a race car'. The RSC was based on the RAV4.

The RSC was never made into a production vehicle.
Toyota MR2 Street Affair

The Toyota MR2 Street Affair was a Toyota concept sports car based on the MR2 that was designed by Toyota Germany.

A turbocharger was added to the engine to lift power from 100 kW to 193 kW. The body was made from fibreglass, with carbon fibre panels and numerous air scoops leading to the engine bay. The front took style cues from Toyota's Formula 1 car, having a pointed nose and a front wing close to the ground with Formula 1 style wing-lets in front of semi-exposed tyres. The rear mirror was replaced with a camera.
Toyota Alessandro Volta

The Alessandro Volta is a concept car developed in the collaboration of the Japanese manufacturer Toyota and the Italian design company Italdesign Giugiaro. The concept vehicle named after Alessandro Volta, the Italian physicist who invented the battery (and the namesake of the volt unit of measurement), was officially unveiled at the 2004 Geneva Motor Show as a study of a hybrid electric sports car.

The concept never materialized as a production car due to high costs involved.

The car was built on a carbon fiber chassis and seats three people abreast.

It features a four wheel drive hybrid electric power-train of the Lexus RX 400h which combines a 3.3 L V6 3MZ-FE gasoline engine with two electric motors. The gasoline engine is fitted behind the rear axle and there are additional two electrically powered engines, one on each axle. The combination develops a maximum output of 300 kW (402 bhp), which enables the car to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) in 4.03 seconds and reach the top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). It uses drive-by-wire controls.
Toyota FTX

The FTX is a concept full-size pickup truck that Toyota showed to the public at the 2004 North American International Auto Show. The redesigned 2007 model year Tundra was based on the FTX concept vehicle.
Toyota FSC(Mark X ZiO)

The FSC (Flexible saloon Concept) was a concept wagon based on the Camry that was first shown at the 2005 Tokyo Motor Show. The first two rows had two bucket seats each. The third row bench seat could be set to hold two more passengers. The rear seat backrest could also be folded down to make a long deck at lower cushion height. Lastly, the rear seat backrest could be left upright and the lower cushions could be electrically retracted into the cargo area to make a deep cargo space.

The FSC was made into production in Japan only as the Mark X ZiO.
Toyota Camry TS-01

The Camry TS-01 is a concept car based on the Camry and was unveiled at the 2005 Melbourne International Motor Show in Australia. The aim of the Camry TS-01 was to showcase the skill of Toyota Australia designers and engineers.

Its major features are the stylist changes and the supercharged 1MZ-FE engine.
Toyota Aurion Sports Concept

The Aurion Sports Concept was a concept car based on the Aurion (which was itself based on the Camry) and revealed at the 2006 Australian International Motor Show. The car was a styling exercise previewing the TRD Aurion, which was subsequently released in August 2007.
Toyota RiN

The Toyota RiN is a concept car built by Toyota and first shown at the 2007 Tokyo Auto Show. The vehicle was designed to promote relaxation and healthiness. It has received much media attention for its odd design and its steering wheel, which changes colour depending on the driver's mood. The concept was unveiled at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show.

The concept features four seats accessed by two large sliding doors, and windows made of green glass, designed to reduce ultraviolet and infra-red light. "The concept, which looks like some sort of futuristic stagecoach, is designed to help its driver become one with nature". The car features a pinpoint humidifier, and an oxygen-level conditioner. It was reported that the car was inspired by a milkfloat.

A Toyota press release stated that "the RiN focuses on increased comfort and serene, healthy living. Through their relationship to the vehicle, drivers are encouraged to reevaluate themselves and, furthermore, to turn their attention to society and nature, producing a healthy rhythm for both mind and body." Toyota says the car "creates a feeling of harmony with the surrounding environment by using sliding doors with a low window that lets you view nature at ground level, as well as headlights with light distribution control that take into consideration pedestrians and vehicles coming in the opposite direction."
Toyota 1/X

The Toyota 1/X (pronounced one-Xth) is a concept car built by Toyota and first shown at the 2007 Tokyo Auto Show. It is a gasoline-electric hybrid vehicle utilizing plug-in technology. The car weighs only 926 pounds (420 kg) but has as much interior room as the Toyota Prius. The car's frame is mainly carbon-fiber reinforced plastic, which allows it to be light weight yet strong. The engine is 500 cc and sits under the rear two of four seats, driving the rear wheels.

Toyota envisions the car to be made of seaweed in the future.
Toyota Aygo Crazy

The Aygo Crazy is a concept vehicle built by Toyota as a modified Toyota Aygo and first revealed at the 2008 British International Motor Show.
Scion iQ Concept

The Scion iQ concept vehicle was built by Five Axis (California, USA) based on the Toyota iQ and displayed in April 2009 at the New York Auto Show.Changes included a 1.3 litre 4-cylinder VVT-i engine, Five Axis custom stainless exhaust, 18x8.5-inch Five:AD S6:F custom wheels with nickel finish prototyped by MetalFX, Yokohama 2.5/40R18 tires, TEIN Super Street coil over suspension, Five Axis wide body conversion kit, custom accented headlights and tail lights.

An identical car, rebadged as the Toyota iQ Sport, was later presented at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show.

Motor Trend reported the production version of Scion iQ would begin in North America in late 2010 for the 2011 model year, or in early 2011 for the 2012 model year. The air bags will be recalibrated for unbelted and out-of-position occupants and the bumpers will be slightly extended.
Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid Concept

The Prius Plug-In Concept is a plug-in hybrid concept car shown at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show based on the third generation Prius and the predecessor of the for-mass-production Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid. Its batteries can be charged in 180 minutes from 100 volts or in 100 minutes from 200 volts and can travel 20 km before needing to start the gasoline engine.
Lexus LF-Ch

The LF-Ch is a concept four-door hatchback Lexus unveiled in September 2009 at the Frankfurt International Motor Show. The designation refers to Lexus Future-Compact hybrid. The LF-Ch exterior featured a more aggressive interpretation of the L-finesse design language, with an arching roofline, rear spoiler, and single-bar grille. The rear door handles were integrated into the C-pillar window trim. The concept was equipped with a hybrid 2.4 L inline-four gasoline engine with an electric motor. Inside, the LF-Ch featured wood, polished aluminum, and semi-aniline leather, along with paddle shifters, a turbine-style instrument panel, and Lexus' Remote Touch control interface with pop-up information screen. The rear seat featured entertainment options in the form of headrest-mounted iPhone docks.

The LF-Ch was intended to preview a forthcoming premium compact vehicle, which was expected to enter production in the near future and targeted at European markets. Such a vehicle, originally codenamed C-Premium in early press reports, was designated CT 200h, CT 300h, or CT 400h in trademark applications filed in June 2009 in the US and in Canada.The LF-Ch concept measured 4,300 mm (169.3 in) long, 1,790 mm (70.5 in) wide, and 1,400 mm (55.1 in) in height, with a wheelbase of 2,600 mm (102.4 in). It may very well presumptively be a Lexus based on the Toyota Corolla.
