Edward J. Claghorn (The first U.S. patent for automobile seat beats)

E.J. Claghorn was granted the first United States patent for a safety belt on February 10, 1885. According to patent No. 312,085, "this invention relates to belts designed to be applied to the person and provided with hooks and other attachments for securing the person to a fixed object."

Although this invention wasn't initially intended for automobiles, the same concept of a safety belt began appearing in American cars by the early 1900s but only as a consumer option.
