gorden wagener (the new Designer of Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG)

Gorden Wagener sees cars as design objects of the highest complexity, which makes his work and career at a premium brand like Mercedes-Benz something akin to an ascent of Mount Everest. Wagener was 39 years old when he succeeded Peter Pfeiffer as Head of Design at Mercedes-Benz in mid-2008. The native of Essen started drawing cars when he was just a little boy.

Wagener studied Industrial Design in Essen, and beginning in 1995 he worked for Opel, Mazda, and Volkswagen before his mentor Pfeiffer brought him to Sindelfingen in 1997. Today, Wagener oversees a staff of about 500 employees in Sindelfingen and at four other design studios around the world. He made his debut as Head of Design at the 2008 Paris Motor Show with the “Fascination” concept car, which featured design elements that would be used in the subsequent new version of the E-Class. With the Concept BlueZero the designer showed how a manufacturer of premium automobiles like Mercedes-Benz was able to successfully address the trend toward alternative drive systems. This year Wagener’s team presented its masterpiece, a sensational revival of the gullwing design, used this time in the SLS AMG super sports car the designer showed how a manufacturer of premium automobiles like Mercedes-Benz was able to successfully address the trend toward alternative drive systems.
